The Enduring nature of Mid-Century design is undoubtedly down to the adventurous and skilled designers of this era, growing from the Bauhaus functional style, the advance of technology and new materials after WW2, along with the expansion of Suburbanisation meant these designers were perfectly placed to have autonomy within their design.
Disposing of ‘fuss’ and ornamentation to create decorative furniture, the designers of the mid 20th century stripped down the furniture letting form follow function, instead using an economy of line, wether that be geometric (‘atomic’ based around aerospace), organic (based again around the biological advancements in science) or using textures and ‘gimmicks’ such as used in the Dyrlund, Denmark flip flap table, making simple and iconic pieces.
Danish and British designers were at the forefront of this movement with designers such as Gordon Russell,Eric Lyons and Peter Hayward working for famous brands like, Stag, Uniflex, G-plan and Ercol.
